The Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis – the ancient predecessor of today’s Plovdiv, is the biggest early christian church in our country. Its size and decoration as well as its proximity to the ancient city’s forum are evidence of the large and influential christian community Philippopolis once had. Two layers of exquisite mosaics in an area of over 2000 square metres have been revealed in the remains of the church. For many centuries the mosaics have been hidden underground until their complete restoration and with the construction of the modern museum building in 2017.
